Kidney Cancer

What is Kidney Cancer?

Kidney cancer occurs when abnormal cells in the kidney grow uncontrollably and form a tumor. The most common type of kidney cancer in adults is Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC).

Many kidney tumors are discovered incidentally during ultrasound or CT scans performed for unrelated reasons. When detected early, kidney cancer is often highly treatable.

Common Symptoms

Early kidney cancer may not cause any symptoms. As the disease progresses, patients may experience:

  • Blood in the urine (hematuria)
  • Pain in the side or back (flank pain)
  • A lump or swelling in the abdomen
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of appetite
  • Persistent fever without an obvious cause

However, many kidney cancers are detected before symptoms develop.

Risk Factors

Factors that may increase the risk of kidney cancer include:

  • Smoking
  • Obesity
  • High blood pressure
  • Family history of kidney cancer
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Certain inherited genetic conditions
  • Increasing age

How is Kidney Cancer Diagnosed?

Evaluation may include:

  • Detailed medical history and physical examination
  • Urine analysis
  • Blood tests
  • Ultrasound of the kidneys
  • Contrast-enhanced CT scan
  • MRI scan in selected cases
  • Chest imaging to assess for spread of disease
  • Additional staging investigations when required

Staging of Kidney Cancer

Once diagnosed, kidney cancer is staged based on:

  • Size of the tumor
  • Involvement of surrounding tissues
  • Lymph node involvement
  • Presence or absence of distant spread (metastasis)

Accurate staging helps determine the most appropriate treatment strategy.

Treatment Options

Treatment depends on the size of the tumor, stage of the disease, kidney function, and overall health of the patient.

Active Surveillance

Small kidney masses in selected patients may be monitored with regular imaging and follow-up rather than immediate intervention.

Partial Nephrectomy (Kidney-Sparing Surgery)

Whenever feasible, only the tumor is removed while preserving the healthy portion of the kidney.

Benefits include:

  • Preservation of kidney function
  • Excellent cancer control for appropriately selected tumors
  • Reduced risk of long-term kidney impairment

Radical Nephrectomy

For larger or more complex tumors, complete removal of the affected kidney may be required.

This procedure may be performed using:

  • Laparoscopic surgery
  • Robotic-assisted surgery
  • Open surgery in selected cases

Ablative Treatments

Selected small kidney tumors may be treated using minimally invasive techniques such as:

  • Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)
  • Cryoablation

These options may be suitable for patients who are not ideal candidates for surgery.

Treatment for Advanced Kidney Cancer

Patients with advanced or metastatic kidney cancer may benefit from:

  • Targeted therapy
  • Immunotherapy
  • Combination systemic treatments
  • Multidisciplinary cancer care

Why Early Detection Matters

Many kidney cancers are discovered incidentally before symptoms appear. Early diagnosis often allows treatment with kidney-sparing surgery and improves long-term outcomes.

Any episode of unexplained blood in the urine should be evaluated by a urologist.
